Scientific Activity and Research About Neologisms

Here I add from time to time some tidbits that may be of interest to some readers. You are welcome to suggest additions: leon@hawaii.edu

BUREAU FOR SCIENTIFIC TERMS AND NEOLOGISMS
The Bureau was established in 1966 and it's targets are the following:
  1. Formation of an Archive of Neologisms. Linguistic check and proposals for the replacement of the wrong Greek neologisms with the correct ones and of foreign neologisms with Greek, provided that they are not commonly accepted or confuse the Greek declensional system.
  2. Coinage of Greek scientific terminology.
The Bureau works on the language of the daily / weekly press and updates the Neologisms Archive. For the coinage of Greek scientific terms the Bureau cooperates with specialists from various fields and the final decisions are taken by a Supervising Committee of the Academy. The recorded neologisms, accompanied with the Bureau's proposals, as well as the Greek scientific terms - and their equivalents in English or French - are being published regularly in special issues.

The Bureau works in cooperation with the Bureau de Terminologie de la Commission des Communautés Européennes in Luxembourg and the French Ministerial Committees for Terminology. It has also collaborated with the Organisation Internationale d' Unification des Néologismes Terminologiques (OIUNT), Warsaw, the Hellenic Astronautical Society, the Hellenic Medical Society and the Hellenic Chemists' Society.

Until now the Bureau has published 5 issues of scientific terminology and neologisms. Many of the proposals which were presented in these issues are being adopted by some reference dictionaries of the Modern Greek language.

From: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neologisms

(...) Neologisms are by definition "new", and as such are often directly attributable to a specific individual, publication, period or event. The term "neologism" was itself coined around 1800, so in the early 19th century, the word "neologism" was itself a neologism.

In psychiatry, the term is used to describe the use of words that only have meaning to the person who uses them, independent of their common meaning. It is considered normal in children, but a symptom of thought disorder (indicative of a psychotic mental illness, such as schizophrenia) in adults. Use of neologisms may also be related to aphasia acquired after brain damage resulting from a stroke or head injury.[1] People with autism may also create neologisms.[2]

In theology, a neologism is a relatively new doctrine (for example, rationalism). In this sense, a neologist is an innovator in the area of a doctrine or belief system, and is often considered heretical or subversive by the mainstream clergy or religious institution(s). (...)

(...) Scientific and Medical Language

While the English vernacular still required additional regulation at the beginning of the nineteenth century, its borrowings and constructions from other languages, especially Latin, allowed English to function in literary, legal, commercial, and scientific forums.  Science was (and is) an especially fecund field for neologisms, and scientific nomenclature accounts for most of the Present Day English vocabulary (Crystal 372). Quite often these new terms are formed from the languages of antiquity. In the early nineteenth century medical doctors were particularly adept at creating new terms from classical sources to name common ailments (Bailey 140).  The naming of the inflammations of various organs was a very popular practice resulting in tonsillitis (1801), gastritis (1806), prostatitis (1844), and appendicitis (1886). The procedures for the removal of diseased parts of the body were also given elevated names such as gastroectomy (1886), prostatectomy (1890), and appendectomy (1895) (Bailey 140).

The trend in word creation in the medical and scientific circles of the nineteenth century revived the inkhorn controversy of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, and two issues surfaced (Bailey 141).  The first issue with the newly coined medical terms concerned the etymological purity of the words constructed.  In the examples above, –itis and –tomy are not Latin suffixes, but rather are derived from Greek (Bailey 142). Purists believed that they should thus only pair with words of Greek origin. Ironically, “Such ‘mistakes’ in the creation of new words were visible only to those who, schooled in Greek and Latin, arrogated to themselves a privileged authority to opine about English” (Bailey 142).  In addition, this objection creates another level in the social division generated by Latin.  First, there are those who are familiar with the classics and understand the etymologies; second, those who employ the aspects of both the Greek and Latin to create a learned term without understanding etymology; and finally those who are unfamiliar with any aspect of either Latin or Greek. (...)

Writers like words, and speculative fiction writers in particular like to make them up. The best neologisms are successful enough to cross over from literature to everyday language; "cyberspace" (W. Gibson's Neuromancer) and "robot" (K. Capek's R.U.R.) are just two examples. However, not every made-up word is created equal. This article examines what makes a good neologism in fantasy or science fiction, and how ignoring the basics of science or language development can mutilate a perfectly good story. (...)

Many neologisms in the fantastic literature have become successful enough to make it into dictionaries and everyday language. The following table presents just a few examples and their sources.
Word Author Source Year
Robot Karel Capek R.U.R. 1920
Lilliputian Jonathan Swift Gulliver's Travels 1726
Muggle J.K. Rowling Harry Potter Books 1997
All three neologisms are easy to pronounce and remember, and each of the three denotes a new concept. Before Karel Capek, there was no word for a mechanical person. He gave us one, and we use it. (...)

Most scientific terms are constructed from Latin and Greek words. For example, to name a being with many tails, combine root words:

Latin: multicaudal = "multi" (many) + "cauda-" (tail)

Greek: polyuric = "poly" (many) + "uro" (tail)

However, avoid combining a Latin word with a Greek one - in compound words, both parts should originate in the same language.

There are many good online dictionaries, most notably Latin Dictionary and Grammar Aid, by the University of Notre Dame, that can help translate English to Latin and back. They also have extensive information on declensions and gender.

In the Air

Who says big ideas are rare?

by Malcolm Gladwell May 12, 2008

Pythagoras; Gaussian distributions were not discovered by Gauss. The
examples were so legion that Stigler declared the existence of
Stigler's Law: "No scientific discovery is named after its original
discoverer." There are just too many people with an equal shot at those
ideas floating out there in the ether. We think we're pinning medals on
heroes. In fact, we're pinning tails on donkeys.

Stigler's Law was true, Stigler gleefully pointed out, even of
Stigler's Law itself. The idea that credit does not align with
discovery, he reveals at the very end of his essay, was in fact first
put forth by Merton. "We may expect," Stigler concluded, "that in years
to come, Robert K. Merton, and his colleagues and students, will
provide us with answers to these and other questions regarding eponymy,
completing what, but for the Law, would be called the Merton Theory of
single science."...

From an email on May 30, 2008:

This research seeks to transform the way behavioral scientists leverage relevant research through mapping of constructs. As defined by Cronbach and Meehl, a construct is "an intellectual device by means of which one construes events. It is a means of organizing experience into categories" (1955). Finding related constructs and theories, however, Is difficult because different researchers associate overlapping contents, synonyms, and homonyms with these constructs. We propose to collect the questionnaire items that represent constructs and discover the overlapping network among them by using four different approaches, including Latent Semantic Indexing (LSI). We also identify a set of important relations among the constructs (e.g. is-the-same-as, is-a-specialization-of, is-a- part-of) and ways of recognizing these relations. We believe that a network of these constructs, called the Inter-Nomological Network (INN), will help researchers to track the temporal and relational structure of existing behavioral constructs while facilitating discovery, re-conceptualization, and integration of theoretical constructs in the behavioral academic fields. Thereby, we believe it will help us to build on existing research with decreased rate of construct and theory reinvention in the behavioral sciences.

Amazon.com Statistically Improbable Phrases

Amazon.com's Statistically Improbable Phrases, or "SIPs", are the most distinctive phrases in the text of books in the Search Inside!™ program. To identify SIPs, our computers scan the text of all books in the Search Inside! program. If they find a phrase that occurs a large number of times in a particular book relative to all Search Inside! books, that phrase is a SIP in that book.

SIPs are not necessarily improbable within a particular book, but they are improbable relative to all books in Search Inside!. For example, most SIPs for a book on taxes are tax related. But because we display SIPs in order of their improbability score, the first SIPs will be on tax topics that this book mentions more often than other tax books. For works of fiction, SIPs tend to be distinctive word combinations that often hint at important plot elements.

Click on a SIP to view a list of books in which the phrase occurs. You can also view a list of references to the phrase in each book. Learn more about the phrase by clicking on the A9.com search link.
